What is the purpose of APOS?

The purpose of APOS is to enhance patient-centred healthcare in Singapore, where patients actively participate as partners in their own healthcare journey.

Additionally, APOS enables hospitals, policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals to involve individuals with ‘lived experience’ to improve their services and products.

Which patient organizations are part of APOS?

APOS Membership form is ready to be shared with various Patients’ Organizations(PO)to join APOS. There is no fee associated with membership for POs. Write to us here if you are interested to get your organization to be part of APOS.

How can I join or collaborate with APOS?

We welcome likeminded individuals, or corporates/institutions that share our vision for a patients-as-partners healthcare environment. Find out how you can Get Involved and join us as volunteers or partners.

What diseases or conditions does APOS focus on?

APOS invites all Patients’ Organizations to join, irrespective of their focus on a specific disease. We are all inclusive. We appreciate the effort of the following:

  • Registered under the Ministry of Health(MOH)
  • Registered under the Ministry of Education(MOE)
  • Patient Support Groups that are not yet a registered organization but are helping patients being treated at one or more medical centres/hospitals
  • Online support groups initiated by a patient or caregiver based in Singapore
How is APOS funded?

We partner with private companies, non-profit organizations and philanthropic organizations like Rotary Clubsto secure funding for patient empowerment and educational projects.

2. Support for Patients & Caregivers

How can APOS help patients and caregivers?

APOS wears many hats and everything we do leads to one thing. That is to INSPIRE person-centered healthcare by cutting across to patient organizations, hospitals, policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals as well as individuals with ‘lived experience’, to make a difference, not only to patients and caregivers, but the entire healthcare system in Singapore.

We believe that to INSPIRE is to take the first step towards transformation, and the creation of a patients-as-partners healthcare ecosystem.

Does APOS offer financial assistance or support programs?

While APOS does not offer financial assistance, people looking for it for the specific health conditions may contact one of the Patient Organizations associated with APOS. They might have some financial assistance programs or be able to connect you to other resources.

Can APOS connect me with other patients or support groups?

Yes. APOS fosters peer-to-peer support amongst patients and caregivers by engaging with established as well as new patient support groups with resources, or through events.

How can I access advocacy resources for my healthcare needs?

3. Advocacy & Policy

What are APOS’ advocacy priorities?

Our advocacy priorities lie in pushing for patient-centric policies and influence national health agendas and policies to transform the healthcare system in Singapore, to one that embraces the concept of patients as partners.

How does APOS work with policymakers and healthcare providers/stakeholders?

APOS works with policymakers and healthcare providers by acting as a bridge between patients and decision-makers. Here’s how we collaborate:

Advocacy & Policy Influence – Engage with key stakeholders to push for patient-friendly laws and policies, ensuring patient voices are heard in national healthcare decisions. For e.g., patients can volunteer through their group to be on the Consumer Panel by the Agency for care Effectiveness, MOH

Research & Data Sharing – Universities, Medical Schools, Research Institutes and Contract Research Organizations to integrate patient perspectives into product development and research, collect and present patient experiences, needs, and outcomes to support evidence-based policymaking.

Education & Awareness – Inform both patients and healthcare professionals about their rights & responsibilities around access to medical care, treatment options, processes and policy changes to ensure informed decision-making by patients.

Partnerships & Collaboration – Introduce patient organisations, pharmaceutical companies, medical technology companies, and healthcare providers like hospitals and clinics, acute care and community-based residential facilities, to involve patients in improving care standards and create programs that prioritize patient’s preferences.

4. Medical & Research Involvement

Does APOS support or fund medical research?

APOS is able to obtain information on medical breakthroughs, trends and research etc by working with industry partners, like pharmaceutical companies, medical technology associations, and research companies that fund the research.

How can patients participate in clinical trials?

APOS has partnered with the Singapore Clinical Research Institute (SCRI), a portal that lists all trials in Singapore. Moreover, there are other educational resources available for the benefit of patients and their caregivers.

Does APOS take a stand, and what is its position on new treatments and drug approvals?

APOS does not have the expertise to comment on specific medication, treatments and drug approval. These are handled by the clinicians and the policymakers.

When it comes to access to holistic support, APOS stands by our vision to enable all patients to have access to holistic support in their end-to-end patient journey.

How does APOS ensure ethical standards in research?

Ethical standards in research are ensured by the relevant authorities in hospitals, universities and medical schools. For e.g. Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Ministry of Health

Can I contribute to research as a patient or caregiver?

Yes, you can contribute to research by participating in research studies undertaken by clinicians, researchers in hospitals, medical schools, universities, institutes and/or patients’ organizations.

What are the benefits of being a member/partner organization?

APOS aims to INSPIRE change.

Working closely with patients’ organizations (PO), APOS is committed to identifying gaps from a PO’s perspective, negotiate with different healthcare stakeholders to drive joint efforts, by co-creating processes and content for various purposes.

It is through collaboration and responding to the unmet needs of patients as identified by the PO, can patients see an impact in their lives.

What skills or expertise are needed for volunteering?

Patients are experts! Having the ‘lived experience’ of coping with challenges that come with a diagnosis, qualifies a person to contribute. The same applies to caregivers.

Bundled with this you might have additional skills that would open additional possibilities, e.g., digital marketing, corporate communications, event management, public speaking, training in accounting, or management, journalism, and many more.

6. Events & Awareness

Does APOS organize events or awareness campaigns?

APOS regularly organises seminars, talks and educational/training programmes. Besides these, APOS is also involved, in varying capacities, in events organised by, but not limited to, other patient or healthcare organisations. Check out our calendar of events here.

How can I participate in some of your events or initiatives?

Periodic engagement and networking sessions are planned for Patients’ Organizations(PO) and other healthcare stakeholders. If you represent any of the POs, you could scan the QR Code to register for any of the APOS events.

  • If you are a member of any PO kindly indicate your keen interest with them so that all future APOS event information is also shared with you by them.
  • If you work for any private company, university, medical school, hospital, clinic or residential care facility, kindly indicate your keen interest with them so that all future APOS event information is also shared with you by them.
  • If you are a patient advocate or caregiver NOT part of any group, kindly indicate this during registration for our records. For e.g., students, retirees, homemakers yet to join a patient support group or have chosen to work independently

How can I donate to APOS? How are donations used to support patients and advocacy?

Your donations will be used to further the APOS Mission through the programs planned with Patients’ Organizations. It is through these that APOS will move in the direction of our VISION to enable all patients to have access to holistic support in their end-to-end journey.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

At the moment, APOS is a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG), and has yet to register as a charity. Several years down the road, and after establishing programs that benefit the community, APOS can apply for the Institution of Public Character (IPC) status. When approved, donations will be entitled to tax-deductible receipts.

Can I fundraise for APOS? Are there corporate sponsorship opportunities?

Absolutely! We will be delighted to hear more about your ideas and motivation to raise funds for APOS. We look forward to meeting you.
